May Day Celebration

This year we will be celebrating our third May Day as a team, and we hope you will join us!

May Day (May 1) is a big deal for morris dancers and something that most teams do to start off the season of dancing and to welcome in the spring. We'll be dancing at dawn (yes, dawn!) Sunday, May 1st, at the outlook closest to the top of Monongahela Incline. (See map below) Join us to watch the beautiful view of the sunrise from the bluffs of Mount Washington as we welcome in the spring! Participate in the singing and maypole dancing.

Parking is available at the top of the incline (both on-street, or in the nearby paid lot at Shiloh and Virginia). Unfortunately on Sundays the Incline doesn't start until 8:45 a.m., so you'll have to get to the top without it. (Incline Information.)

Approximate Schedule:

  • 6:00am-sunrise (whenever we declare the sun to be “up” - hopefully it will be obvious!): Singing, morris dancing and toasting the sun up. (Official sunrise is 6:19am)
  • 6:30-6:40: May Day cake and participatory dance with audience
  • 6:40-7:00: Morris dancing

We may also be doing some guerilla morris after breakfast, so watch out – you never know where we might pop up!
